Well-being through Arts and Culture

December 9, 2019

3:00pm - 5:30pm

Cultural and traditional folk arts not only help refugee and immigrant communities stay connected with their culture when navigating life in a new country, they can also serve as a means of rapport and trust

building between mental health providers and their

refugee and immigrant clients.

Come learn about connecting through arts and culture, examples of how to use traditional art in trauma recovery practice,

and create a community art piece together!

There will be a small sale of handmade traditional Karen (an ethnic group from Burma) weaving. Everything will be 50% off ($10-$50 with discount). The items were made by Karen women as part of a support group that Luba Gonina, our presenter, facilitated. All money from purchases will go back to the women. Cash only, please.

For more information about the Karen weavers, please visit the website: https://weavingtogetherpdx.weebly.com/ or watch this video.

Luba works with refugees and immigrants at LCSNW since 2011. She specializes in design and implementation of culturally specific treatments. Luba came to the U.S. as a refugee with a degree in Graphic Arts from Kiev, Ukraine. She continued her education at Portland State University graduating Cum Laude with a Bachelor in Psychology & Art and received her MA in Art Therapy Counseling from Marylhurst University in Oregon.

Her education, personal and professional experience provide her with deep insight to the emotional health issues refugees and immigrants are facing and enable her to find individually tailored and culturally appropriate treatment solutions for her clients. She uses an integrative approach strongly influenced by cognitive behavioral theories, and incorporates trauma-informed art therapy.
